Stress has been recognized as the number one cause of disease.

Cancer and heart disease, the number one and number two natural causes of death are directly associated with stress.

Worse yet, the number one cause of death, as reported from sources as varied as the British Medical Journal to the new media explorer, is the very medical system that we rely upon to regain our health when we fall ill.

So, if your goal is to live a long and healthy life, and to be healthy and strong your entire life, your number one goal becomes to eliminate stress from your life in the most effective way possible.

The problem is, there is no definite route to reducing stressors in your life.

Stressors can be good news or bad news, happy things or sad things. A phone ringing can be a stressor. Going to work, or living with people you cannot see eye-to-eye with may make your body stressed out from morning until night. A stormy relationship in your life may drain your energy. An overbearing friend may force you into confrontation after confrontation. The sources of stress seem to grow algebraically, day after day. We have cell-phones, beepers, email and fax lines to add to the constant barrage of noise and vision pollution that fill our daily life.

What works better than attempting to avoid these stresses in your daily routine is to accept that stress exists in your life, and follow the path to eliminating stress from each day. When you learn how to eliminate stress from your body, and when you learn to strengthen your body, stress and all of the health issues that come with this plague become a distant memory.

So, here are the top five methods to help relieve stress from your body:

#5: Drop toxic foods from your diet

You have control over what passes through your lips, so eliminate the chemicals and toxins that normally get into your body. A pure, clean diet will create a body that handles stress a hundred times better than a body fed pure junk.

When it comes to nutrition, never eat anything with ingredients you can barely pronounce. There are very healthily branded breads out there that are literally poisons – full of mono and di-glycerides. Check you fridge – if mono and di-glycerides are in your bread, throw that loaf out.

And this is only the beginning of chemicals that are slipped into foods that look healthy. The bottom line: do not eat food that comes out of a box or out of a can. Read every label of boxed foods if you must eat these, and if you cannot pronounce a word it is not likely to be good for you. Do not put it into your body.

Eat only fresh fruits, fresh vegetables, fresh juices and fresh meats. Whole grains and nuts can compliment your fresh food diet to make for a diet that does not contribute to these stressors that are killing your body.

#4: Set aside at least one hour for downtime every day

You will not be around to accomplish your goals in life if you shorten your life by cramming more and more goals into every day. Downtime is essential for reducing stress. Your ideal downtime would be downtime spent quietly stretching your body’s stiffness away, blended with time in prayer and meditation.

#3: Control your state

The stress levels you feel are entirely due to the way you react to what life brings you. Problems are only challenges. Frustrations and annoyances are only successful in frustrating and annoying you if you have a mindset that allows for easy frustration.

You control your mental state. Try this exercise:

During downtime, when you are feeling most relaxed, create what is called an Anchor. An Anchor is an act that will draw your memory back to the moment of calmness you had during your downtime. I simply hold my index and middle finger against my thumb during down time, and in times of stress, bring these three together again to return my body to a state of calm.

When you can return your body to a state of calm during stress, you have essentially eliminated the damage that stress would have otherwise done to you.

#2: Ensure your body is completely flexible

Your body holds stress in its muscular system. A damaged muscular system can be caused by stress staying in your body and doing damage to your health.

Picture this: a body full of stressed out muscles. Even the easiest and happiest of lives will create a body full of stressed out muscles. It is simply the human experience, good or bad, which creates this internal muscular tension. Left alone, this tension creates high blood pressure, high cholesterol, circulation problems, and chronic pain.

Nearly every condition that can take our lives is associated with allowing this stress to remain inside of our body. The first sign of stress dominating our body is any kind of muscular ache or pain or body rigidity. Body rigidities are normal motions that you should be able to make, but almost all of the population over thirty years of age cannot make these motions because they have allowed muscle tension to take over their body.

The secret is in blending flexibility exercises with your time of quiet prayer and meditation. Flexibility exercises can burn your calories, make you lean and strong, and once you’ve learned them, they can become second nature to perform.

Jogging and other exercise programs can be used to relieve stress from your body, but your most intense results will come from a period of blending flexibility exercises with the downtime of prayer and mediation.
